Chow Chow (choyote) Thuvaiyal

Every week I do one Thuvaiyal using vegetable. I use this for my lunch box. This is for me to try out new chutney / Thuvaiyal variety. This week I wanted to try Chow-chow. It came out very well. I prefer Tomato to tamarind. When I kept this on the table I didn't tell the kids and my husband about what is used in the chutney. They couldn't guess it. 


Chow Chow - chopped 1 cup
Bengal Gram Dhal - 1 tablespoon

Urad Dhal - 1 tablespoon
Roasted Gram Dhal - 1 teaspoon
Curry leaves - 2 strings
Garlic - 4 pods
Red chilli -4
Tomato -1 or tamarind - 1 marble size (I have used Tomato)
Asafetida - a pinch
Ginger - 1 inch
Oil - 3 teaspoon


Peel the skin, remove the seed and chop the chow chow into small pieces. 

Chop tomato into small pieces

Dry roast Dhals and chillies. Keep it aside

Heat oil in a kada, Add Garlic fry till raw small goes off. Add Ginger, Add Curry leaves and fry for 20 sec
Add Chow Chow and Tomato and cook till Chow chow become soft. Allow it to cool

Transfer it to blender and Grind together coarsely.

Serve with rice, Chapatti, Dosa, Idli
