Paal Paniyaram - Traditional Sweet recipe - New year special

From the time I saw this post at sharmispassions I was so tempted to do it. Loved the texture and softness of it.. I was waiting for an opportunity to try ..I tried this during this holidays.. It came out wonderful. Thanks Sharmi for it. I have tried this at my friends house during school days which is made so traditional and tasty. After that even though I tried many times at different places it was never the same. This recipe gave the similar taste. Happy new year to all the readers and family!

This is one of my specialty but I seldom do it.. As you notice for most of the side dish I grind the onion and tomatoes due to my 1st son who is not a big fan of Onion. This is a simple and flavourful chutney. This is one of my favourite. This goes extremely well with idly, dosa.. I use it as spread on bread too. This can be kept for a long time, in fridge it can last up to 2 weeks. This definitely comes in handy after my busy work at office..This would definitely score with all garlic lovers.

I love one pot meals for my lazy Sunday afternoon lunch. I have traveled to north India a few times. My first North India visit was to Mumbai during Mumbai flood in 2005 / 2006.. (cannot remember exact timing) I got stuck in Mumbai as SQ stop flying into Mumbai. I looked for alternative options and ended up flying thro' Calcutta. I had about a day lay over in Calcutta. So When I checked into hotel knowing very little Hindi I decided to have room service for the meal. That's when I first tasted Kichadi. I loved it because of its taste and simplicity of the meal. After that I brought tarladalal cook book and I saw the recipe for kichadi. This recipe is from tarladalal...I have modified the measurements to our family preferences. I made this in rice cooker. You can do it in Pressure cooker also. If you are cooking in pressure cooker you can cook till 4-5 whistles (at medium flame).

Since I heard a lot about the goodness of dry ginger I brought some from India. It was laying in my shelf for quite sometime. Like Pattu saree, Kanchipuram is famous for idli too. I love the seasoning. During college days one of my friend used to pack Kanchipuram idli for lunch. We ended up finishing her tiffin box. I tried this sometime ago and my kids and hubby didn't like it. So I stopped doing it at home. Whenever we visit saravana bhavan I end up ordering Kanchipuram idli. I wanted to do again for the blog. Finally I managed to make it and served it with eggplant chutney and coconut chutney. My kids loved it.

I love jackfruit seeds. Brinjal is one of my favourite vegetable too. Kootu is perfect with steamed rice. I sometime use kootu to mix with rice (use it like sambar). I seldom do kootu with grinded paste ( arachu vitta) but my mum does this very often during Jackfruit season. Since I seldom get Jackfruit after moving to SG (just get it from the fruit we buy which is not enough) I haven't had this for long time. Last time when my mum visited me she brought some from India. My kids love cake. I had custard powder in the fridge. So when my kids wanted cake I decided to try out cake with custard powder for a quick cake recipe. This can be made as cup cake also. This is perfect for beginners. You can use plain custard powder just add 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence in that case.

These days we make millet based recipes very often. I have tried most of the South Indian traditional recipes with Millet. Luckily my family loves this substitution too.  For this I have used equal portion of Moong dhal and foxtail millet but you can use 1:2 also. I prefer 1:1. I have added milk also as my mum always add bit of milk for sweet pongal. It is completely optional. I feel Jaggery based sweets tastes better the day after.

I have been trying many millet recipes. So far my family are really loving millet recipes. I find that foxtail millet with jaggery tastes really great. This is perfect for evening snacks for kids. My kids are crazy about paneer. This gravy is really rich and tasty dish. This can go well with rice / pulav / roti / naan. This is very rich and perfect treat for paneer lovers. I have seen many version of it. Till now I didn't try at home because of the fact the recipe calls for raisins and kids are not big fan of it. But every now and then I am very tempted to try this one. So I have decided to substitute Raisin with Dates chutney / Red chutney / sweet chutney. I love Field beans esp in eggplant sambar. When I was in India we used to get this during Pongal season. My mum told me these days we get it almost everyday. Paneer macaroni - Macaroni with Indian Cottage Cheese - Paneer pasta - Simple kids friendly meal

I wanted to try this Paneer Macaroni for so long.. Macaroni is one of the most favourite dish for my kids. I always use parmesan cheese in making pasta / macaroni. But I don't like the sticky sticky texture.Esp after it cools down. So I seldom pack it for lunch. I made paneer and it was so soft that I thought of adding that to Macaroni instead of regular cheese I use. First question my son asked me when I served him the macaroni was why no cheese today. Now days millet based dishes have become norm at our household. Kodo Millet works so well in almost all Indian dishes. I find that Kodo millet works better than other millets in most dishes. Adai is one of my favourite and is also a protein rich Indian vegan dish. Well I would say at my home at least. I know my in laws will have Adai with fresh homemade butter and my father has it with jaggery. For me just by it self is good enough even though with Avial/Aviyal I can take extra adai.

Tomato Mushroom Rice - Simple one pot meal - Lunch box recipes

Mushroom! One of the must have vegetables for my kids at least once a week. My kids love it in any form. Mushroom is so high in protein.. When I cook mushroom dishes with fresh mushroom esp it stays crisp after cooking and less black part at the center. Even though my kids like all type of mushroom I always use button mushroom in my cooking. In this rice I have added carrot while grinding masala. It gave a slight sweet taste to the rice.

Long Beans Poriyal - Long beans dry masala - Simple side dish for Rice / Roti

I seldom do long beans. Last week when I visited wet market for weekly purchases the shop vendor told me the long beans is really nice.. I should try.. I thought of giving it a try. My kids are big fans of indo chinese food. Esp Manchurian recipes. I had posted Baby corn Manchurian and Mushroom manchurian before in my space. I make this for snack or as side dish for fried rice. This dish is famous with my office colleagues too. You can make this either as dry or gravy. I do a dry version for snack. I find double frying the cauliflower keeps it crisp for longer time. So I have used double fry in this recipe. If you are going to have it immediately and wants to go with just single fry you can do it also

I love Stuffed paratha / chapati for my lazy or busy weekday / weekend dinner. It is so easy and it can be quite filling as well as balanced. Last week when we visited Delhi for a holiday we stayed in a service apartment. And for breakfast they served gobi paratha with yogurt it was so tasty and keeps us full till lunch. This can be a good lunch box item for kids. It can also be used to sneak some vegetables into kids meal. After my return I tried few times but didn't manage to click the final product. Bombay chutney - Besan chutney - Chickpeas flour chutney - simple side dish for dosa, poori and chapathi

This one my mum does it quite often. I seldom do it because of the amount of onions in it. Traditional one is using besan flour but my mum does with roasted gram dhal (which I will post it shortly). This goes very well with Dosa / idli  I like to have it with chapathi also. If you don't have any vegetable in stock but you want to make some quick dinner you can try this.

Apple Kheer

I love fruity dessert. Also when I make fruit based dessert / sweet I either don't add any sugar or reduce it significantly. I always had this feeling that fruit based desserts are healthier option. I was craving for some quick fruit based sweet. I had nice sweet Rose apple so wanted to try out Apple kheer.
