Sookhi Moong Dal (Dhal) / Moong dhal sundal - Easy Sundal / navratri recipes

Every time I do certain dishes for dinner my husband need some other dish to go with it like Salad, Sundal or  soup. Today I didn't plan properly so ended by without anything. Strawberry, cranberries and chia seeds smoothie

I am on protein mania. After my son joined canoeing it is mandatory for him to have some protein rich food at least once a day esp on the day of his training. Chia seeds is something which is pretty plain in taste and very high in protein, low in fat and sodium. So I do include them in shake. Kollu (Horse gram) Paruppu Podi / Horse gram dhal powder

I love horse gram because of its unique nutty taste. In fact I try to have at least 1 teaspoon kollu in some form every day due to the health benefits. I normally do the powder using previously posted method kollu podi. I was bit bored with it. So did variation to that and adding roasted gram dhal gave nice taste. This can be used as idli podi or can be mixed with rice also

Pepper Sevai (Idiyappam)

Being on school holiday I prefer to give something other than bread for the kids for breakfast. Normally South /north Indian breakfast items like idli, dosa, Adai etc.. is our dinner item. So I don't want to repeat the same thing in the morning for breakfast also. So I normally give them some variation with some leftover from dinner. Idiyappam is one such item. Everytime I make idiyappam I make little more to be used in the morning. Normally I do Lemon Sevai or Puli Sevai or Pepper sevai. Of all Pepper sevai is my favourite.

Tofu Omelette

I forgot I had 1 full box of silken tofu in the fridge. I brought new one during my weekly groceries shopping. So I was initially thinking of making Tofu sandwich. Moong Paneer (pasi payaru with Paneer)

My kids love Paneer in any form. Other day for Chapathi they wanted Paneer. I was in a mood for some dhal. But I didn't soak any dhal in advance. So decided use whole moong dhal (pasi payaru). Moong dhal will get cooked fast even without soaking. It tasted so yummy. My son was repeatedly asking me what I have added differently for the masala. This can go well with rice or roti or chapathi.

Blueberry Pie Smoothie

I love the idea of having smoothie for the breakfast. Because it is very easy to do and you can throw in your favourites and difficult to go wrong. Oh yah it is easy to make it healthy. For me it is quite filling too. And I sneak in vegetables or fruits in it and try to use natural sweetener. In this I have used Dates.

Spinach Adai / Ada

I love sneaking in vegetable where-ever possible. After seeing Spinach Ada in Nag's space. I had it in my to do list for a while. Last weekend for the dinner I wanted something quick and something healthy. I had Ada batter in the fridge. So decided to make Spinach ada. My kids who are not big fan of normal ada was pretty happy with it.

Capsicum Poriyal - Gujarati style (method)

My colleague brings this quote often. I love the flavour of it. I love the addition of besan flour in poriyal. I have posted snake gourd with besan flour. Kids love the flavour too. I started doing capsicum after my diet program couple of years before. In fact green capsicum is one of the vegetable recommended during my diet program. These days I buy traffic light (3 color capsicum) almost every week. I have posted many different capsicum dishes. Now enjoy this this tasty one too.. I can eat this as snack

Pineapple Rice

I love pineapple rice. Either this or olive rice is what I order when I visit Thai restaurants. But when you order and if you are vegetarian make sure they do the dishes without fish sauce. I normally ask them when I order. I tried this rice couple of time in the past. Last time when I did it was raining so couldn't take photo. It is so simple and flavourful rice. It is perfect for weekend lunch.

Lauki kofta curry / Bottle gourd kofta gravy / lauke Ke Kofte / Sorakkai balls in rich gravy

There are so many names to this dish. I prefer to do kofta based curry during weekends. As this can serve 2 purposes. Snack and side dish. My kids love koftas may be because they get to eat that with tomato sauce, My husband because it is vegetable base and less oil for me it is because it is multi purpose dish. Bottle gourd is something I buy almost every week. This is one of my favourite vegetables. This can be perfect side dish for rice / roti / Chapathi / Chappathi

Roasted Bell Pepper Pasta

My kids love pasta. I can hear you saying which kids doesn't... I normally try to do different type of pasta esp pesto using vegetables. I love roasted vegetables. So I wanted to try Red bell pepper pesto pasta. Normally I try to do pasta for Friday dinner as I am so exhausted do something elaborate and what kids like. Pasta comes in handy in those situation. I find this Pesto so flavourful and hard to resist

Chocolate Coconut Cake (Eggless)

My son wanted chocolate cake for his birthday. Initially I was thinking of Nutella cake. But he preferred to have chocolate cake. My husband is not a big fan of chocolate cake. He eats only certain chocolate like bounty and Kit Kat. I also love the combo of Coconut and chocolate. It is really indulgent.  It is made in heaven. I wanted less sweeter version so the Ganache I did without sugar. It really tasted rich. If you are big fan of dark chocolate you will fall in love with this. You can have this cake with your favourite scoop of ice cream

Tomato Soup

I love homemade tomato soup. It is very simple and tasty recipe if you have ripped red tomatoes. Even though it is one of the basic recipes, some restaurants spoil it by adding more tomato sauce. I like to do it with fresh tomatoes. My 2nd son who is not a big fan of tomatoes liked this simple version of tomato soup. Some times I do it with just tomatoes. This time I have added carrot as I wanted little sweetness in the soup.

Ragi Malt


Ragi is my favourite grain. I do every possible dish with it.I love Ragi and jaggery combo. It tastes really nice. Ragi malt is my regular breakfast item. This is one of porridge that my kids eat from their young age. In fact I alternate this with sathu mavu kanji for them when I started solid. This is suitable for any age. So enjoy it

sweet potato halwa or shakarkandi halwa or Shakarkhand Halwa step by step recipe

I normally have boiled sweet potato as snack. In Singapore we get different types of sweet potato. I love the Purple one but sometime it can be very dry or lot of fiber in it. Since I normally buy from regular vegetable shop in the wet market near my place she advice me when it is really good (so nice of her). But the white variety is always good. In India my mum used to do ladoo / laddu with it. I got the recipe from my mum it will on my blog soon. Today great-secret-of-life also moved to it's much overdue its own domain. Eggless Oreo Cheesecake

My kids were asking for cheese cake for quite some time. For some reason I was hesitant to try out. Finally I got over it and decided to try out. Initially I wanted to try simple cheese cake but kids were asking for Oreo cheese cake or chocolate cheese cake. I have decided to try out Oreo cheese cake. Then started to search for recipe on the net. Most of recipes are no bake or with egg. I saw the eggless blueberry cake at http://www.korasoi.com/blog/2010/04/eggless-blueberry-and-white-chocolate-baked-cheesecake. I have adopted from there but modified to our taste. Kids loved it. Only thing is I didn't beat the cheese till it smooth. Other than that it was really good. More cheese cakes to come
