Vegetable Biryani (Method 2)

This is version I made first within few weeks after my marriage. I am not a big fan of coconut. Infact till couple of years I don't eat dishes with coconut. So right after marriage my husband ask for biryani I was not sure how to do it. I never bothered to learn from my mum as she uses coconut gravy to make her version of biryani (which I have posted earlier). So I have to rely on my bible those days -- Malika Badrinath. When I saw this version, I jumped out of joy. It is my regulars whenever I invite guest at home. It is definitely healthier version and taste wise it is different from traditional versions but really yummy!

Roasted Gram Dhal Balls

I am big fan of peanut balls. However whenever my mum does it she also do it with Roasted Gram dhal also. These days you can get Ground nut (peanut balls) in the shops but I seldom see Roasted Gram Dhal balls. Suddenly I had the urge to eat the roasted gram dhal balls. My kids never tried that before. I wanted to give it a try. It came out very good.

Vegetarian French Toast (with custard powder) - Sweeter Version

My 2nd son is allergic to egg and I don't eat egg. Every time I make french toast it is only for my hubby and my 1st son. My 2nd one always crib about it and how he wish he can have french toast after hearing all about it from his brother.. I tried doing masala toast, Rawa toast but he was not very impressed with it. So my search for prefect replacement for french toast continued. Hurray! I found one ....He loved this version. For me I find it bit sweet.

Pepper Rice with Cucumber in Yogurt Sauce (Raita)

I wanted to make some simple and yet balanced meal. Adding nuts to the rice makes it special and well balanced esp for the kids. This rice is very simple and easy to make. The combination of pepper, garlic, Red Chillies and cashew nuts really makes it interesting.

Aztec Hot Chocolate

I am big fan of spicy food. I am addicted to chocolate, if I see any good chocolate I must try immediately. This week at one of the lunch buffet I tried chocolate with chilli. I loved it. When I wanted try this at home my son was not sure about it & he was saying what a weird combination. I told him I loved it. But he said no thanks. Still I went ahead to try it was prefect for lazy weekend. I made it 3 days in a row..If you are chilli person you should try too

Red Velvet Cup Cake with White Chocolate Frosting

Red Velvet is speciality of neighbour son. Before I started this blog I seldom bake once I start to bake Since I get good red velvet once in every month minimum if not fortnight it never occured to me to bake myself. This weekend When I asked my son what he wants, he wanted to try red velvet cake. Oops I had all the ingredients except cream cheese and red coloring. I dashed to the shop (in a heavy rain) and got both. But my son goes why we need to do cream cheese frosting why not white chocolate? So here you go Red velvet cup cake with white chocolate frosting

Paneer Kurma (Kruma, Korma)

My kids love anything with Paneer. To me, Paneer dishes are quite easy to make also it is easy to make high protein dishes with it. It is good for both busy weekdays or lazy weekend. Yesterday till late evening I couldn't make up my mind on dinner. It has been while since I made paneer. Since Paneer is my first son's most favourite and I always wait for him to be back from his boarding to make it.. So today he is back for his weekend break. So Need to make quick yet something he likes my first option is to make chapathi with Paneer. Did Paneer Kurma. It came out very well

Barley Salad

I like Chinese dessert with Barley which I get it at our canteen. Thinking of doing it I brought pearl barley quite sometime ago. But never get around it. The Barley was nearing expiry date. So I wanted to do something else with it. I was thinking about doing something like soup or salad. finally I settled in for salad  because it is easier to do and you can mix in whatever you like (nuts, fruits etc..). I have added those fruits and nuts that kids love so that they have urge to try.  It is good alternative to the normal salads. Kids enjoyed it

My kids are very big fans for any snack (that is crunchy) Most of the time I have some snack handy. However Thattai is very rare item. I wanted to post some savoury snack. Sweet Sundal (Cow Peas / Black eye Beans Sweet Salad)

This is first time I have done sweet sundal. When I was talking to my sister (who is preparing to keep golu) she was taking about this sundal. So wanted to try it. If you have sweet tooth try this sweeter version of sundal. I liked it.. It tasted great the next day.

Tom Yam Soup (Vegetarian)

I love Tom Yam Soup. And all the spices used in that. However in most places we don't get vegetarian as it has fish sauce. I realized that in hard way. In the past when I go to one of the restaurant in little India I have this soup without fail thinking I am having vegetarian (even though I suspect something fishy first time I triple confirmed with the server they swear it is vegetarian). One day I packed home for my son and when I got out of cab all cats around the area was chasing me and pouncing on me :-) Once I leave the soup on the floor to pick up other things all of the went near the soup box ( in the end that soup served to cat :-)). Later When I went back to the restaurant I asked whether you have used any sauce in the soup they confirmed they have used fish sauce. From that time on wards whenever I visit Thai restaurants or having Thai food I specifically ask for all the ingredients in it so that I can be sure I am eating vegetarian. From that time most of the time I make soup at home whenever we feel like having it...

7 Bean Sundal

I bought 7 Beans Mix which consists of Azuki Beans, Black Beans, Mung Beans, Kidney Beans, Lima Beans, Red Lentils and Green Lentils. I try to include whole beans at least once a week as source of protein. My kids love sundal esp whole beans of any type. It is pretty easy yet makes the meal more balanced and wholesome. So Why not?

Schezwan Sauce


I love Indo Chinese food. Esp. Spicy food. schezwan sauce has tremendous flavor when added to the Chinese rice, noodles and soups it gives unique taste. I love all the ingredients in it. My kids and my huband loves it with noodles. This is sauce can be used to do many indo chinese food. If you prepare this in advance and store it in fridge you can make any chinese dish in no time. You need to store this in glass bottle

Green Papaya Salad

I love green papaya salad. It is one of must have if I go for any Thai food. It is so easy and yet very flavourful. It is healthy too. There is no oil involved. Be aware if you are eating out as the sauce they might be using is fish sauce so ask for ingredients if you are vegetarian

Vegetable Broth (Vegetable Stock)

Vegetable stock / Broth are used in making lot of soup, Rice recipes. I don't prefer to make it ahead and store it  in the fridge and use it in the recipe which is calling for it. So end up not making it for very long time. Today I had urge to try out the Tom Yam Soup and it taste good if I do it with vegetable broth. And I just finished with my weekly vegetable shopping and had all the vegetable and ingredients needed fresh. So here you go.My Husband told me the soup tasted much better than normal one (normally I just use the water :-) lazy)

Coconut Cupcake

After starting this blog, I am baking more often than before. My kids prefer home baked cakes. I also find it's good as you can control what goes into your cake like amount of butter, oil or sugar. Also you can customize to the need. So these days I end up baking once in every two weeks if not once a week. One thing for sure after blogging it is becoming difficult to diet. Instead I try to make it with healthy alternatives where ever possible. Don't ask me whether this cake is healthy..Judge it yourself

Ash Gourd Olan

It amazes me how we can make mouth watering dishes with very little ingredients. It is not only easy but very tasty too. My mum's sister lives in Trivandrum & she does lot of coconut base recipe. I was taking base recipe from her.. Did some modifications to make it more healthy..I normally use half coconut and half Soya in all coconut milk based dishes. Taste wise I don't find much of difference.. It makes it little more healthier. At my MIL place they also do something similar but with Potato. . . I mixed this curry with cooked Quinoa it tasted so wonderful

Oats Puttu (steamed Oats for breakfast)

A colleague / Friend of mine who is from Kerala brings different type of puttu for lunch. We always try his tasty food. He normally brings oats puttu. It tastes heaven. I got recipe from him and tried at home it was not even close. Also I don't have traditional puttu maker. So I have requested him to do the guest post.. He readily agreed to do. Thanks Rakesh for doing this.

Avocado Noodle - Avocado pesto pasta - Healthy noodles recipe


If you are following me you would have realized by now I am big fan of Avocado. Every Saturday my kids eat maggie noodles for breakfast. I sometime do noodles for my husband and myself too. But for us we will try different kind of noodle. This week I wanted to try noodle with Pesto sauce I had fully ripened Avocado so wanted to add that to the pesto sauce I made. It turned out to be very yummy.

Akkaravadisal / Akkara vadisal / Sweet-milk-pongal

Akaravadisal is something close to Sweet pongal. Ingredients are same for both just that this one has more milk and we need to cook the rice in milk where as in sweet pongal we add milk after the rice and dhal cooked. That's why my kids cannot differentiate but told me today the pongal bit more milky

Carrot and Baby Corn Masala

For the past few weeks every time I buy baby corn I forget about it or never get a chance to cook it for some reason. So this week when I brought baby corn I have decided to make use of it on the same day. My 2nd son doesn't like corn. But I love corn  It has been a while since I cooked it (most of the time I buy corn knob and just cook it and have it as snack). This dish I have noted down quite sometime ago(not sure from where) and I used to do it quite often before esp when we hv guests. I always asked for the recipe every time .. So I wanted to do it and give it try with my son again. To my surprise he liked it.

Ridge gourd tamarind gravy

This is something my Mum does pretty well. Even after many tries I get it wrong either watery or more sour etc.. So I gave up making it on my own. However last time when I was in India I insisted to be with her for the entire process to learn (she is not very good in giving written steps or giving measurement. She just follow her instinct to get her measurement and to my surprise it is always turn out to be perfect). I made few time after that it came out to be wonderful. Yellow Pumpkin, Yam can be substituted in place of ridge gourd

Kootu Powder (Spice to make Vegetable gravy)

I came across this recipe @ http://www.fewminutewonders.com/2011/11/kootu-podi-kootu-powder.html. I loved the combination of the spices. So decided to give it a try. This really gives nice flavour to the vegetable gravy. When you get time you can make it so that you can just add this to any vegetable gravy and make fast , tasty, healthy side dish for rice or roti or chapathi or wraps

Channa / Chickpeas Sundal / Stir Fry

My kids love whole beans. So I do Sundal twice a week to go with dinner / snack. Normally I make simple sundal (meaning cook and season with simple spices). I saw this recipe in Arrsuvai Neram in Jaya TV. It was different for me because of dry spice powder. I was thinking about make it for quite sometime. Just got the chance to do it. This can be served as snack or side dish to rice
