My kids have been pestering me to make Samosa from base at home for many months. Most of the time either I do frozen samosa or with the samosa sheets. My son was asking for Indian type of Samosa. I have been postponing the making of it for one reason or other. Finally I got around it. My kids  loved it. My kids gave me double thumbs up..

Ribbon Pakoda

This is my kids favourite snack.. Normally I used to do it by grinding idli rice and mix it  with Thuar dhal flour. But sometime if there is pieces of rice in the dough it will not come out nicely. So now a days I do it with rice flour or idiyappm flour. Taste wise I don't find any different. It is easier and faster way to do also.

Palkova / Koya / Theratipal

Today's post is a Milk sweet which is called as Paalkova / Thertipal.  My sister thought me how to make it in microwave however I forgot to notedown. After that I tried to do couple of times but ended up as smooth paste rather than grainy one. I saw this post from Jeyashri's Kitchen  and realized what I was missing, Yogurt. However I normally use Low fat condensed milk. So some of the steps will be slightly different. This sweet is so easy and you can do it to treat your surprise visitors also. Even bachelors can do to impress their loved one. I did this when My in laws were visiting me, they were so surprised by the taste of it. And said this is so easy compared to traditional way of how making it which will give good exercise for your hand and take hours to make it

Cucumber Salad

I liked the Cucumber salad that I had at my friend house sometime ago. She gave me recipe but I misplaced. Given she is from Maharashtra I guessed the ingredients and made the salad. It came out to be very delicious not exactly same as I had at her place. I have used Store brought peanut powder. Otherwise you can dry roast the peanut, remove the skin and powder it in the mixie. This has become regular salad at our household as my family loves it.

Vegetable Rice Noodles

I  do noodles every Saturday. Most of the time just do the Maggi instant noodles. Once in a while will try out something else. Last week I had Vegetarian rice noodles at our office canteen. I wanted to try that for the weekend. Initially my kids were bit skeptical that nothing can be as tasty as maggie. It  tasted so nice that my kids willing to alternate with their maggie

Broccoli cauliflower salad

I have confession to make. Broccoli is my worst vegetable.. I have tried it in all forms but still I cannot find a way to include in my diet.. But my kids are so fond of it. They can eat it in any form. However plain cooked broccoli is their preferred option. I had one broccoli in the fridge since it is not enough for every one I have added Cauliflower also. To give nutty flavour I have added Sunflower seeds too. It was big hit with them.

Sweet Rice (Inippu Arisi) Appam / Paniyaram

My In laws were in town. So taking excuses to do snack as my FIL likes snacks during tea time. Even though I like Banana as a fruit I don't like it in dishes or snacks like Appam, Chapathi etc.. As we were chatting my Mother in law was talking about appam and said we can do without banana. I was so excited about it and wanted to do it immediately. It came out well and everyone at home liked it too.

Pal Kozhukattai (kolukattai) / Rice flour ball in milk and coconut Milk - GANESH CHATURTHI RECIPES | VINAYAKA CHAVITHI RECIPES

My mum does only normal sweet kolukattai. However during my college days I have heard and tasted pal kolukattai at my friend's house who is from Karakudi which is famous for the pal kolukattai. After moving to SG, I almost forgot about it. Last year for Vinyagar (Ganesha) Chaturthi I tried it. Everyone at home liked it. I ended up making it quite often these days.

I love anything to do with steam for the health reason. Normally I do kolukattai using rice / ragi flour. I saw this recipe in some other cookery program. Wanted to give it a try for for quite sometime. I did this week. It came out pretty well. Also this is easier than doing with rice or ragi as this one doesn't require any stuffing.

This kolukattai is so easy to do. Both of my kids like it. I normally do it when I am bored with other snacks or do idiyappam. Adding maida to it makes it softer and smoother. Most of the time for Ganesha Chaturthi I do Sweet kolukattai and pal kolukattai. But this version is more favourite with my kids and husband.

Ragi Vada

This is my favourite. However these days I have refined from eating fried stuff.. Today I gave in for my craving. Even if you are strict on your diet you can still have cheat day right?. This vada is purely made up of ragi which is high in iron. My 2nd son and my husband loves the grain. However my first son is not a big fan of it. so I thought he might like this one as he is going thro' teenage cravings for the fried food. But still he didn't like it.. Rest of us couldn't resist. You can see in the photos too they cannot even wait for my photo taking to be finished

Ragi flour - 2 cup
Dry Red Chillies -2-3 (cut into small pieces)
Onion - 5 tablespoon (finely chopped)
Curry leaves - 2 tablespoon (finely chopped)
Mustard seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
Urad dhal - 2 teaspoon
Bengal Gram Dhal - 1 teaspoon
Tamarind - marble size ball (soak it and take tamarind juice)
Oil - 3 tablespoons
Salt per taste
Oil to deep fry

Heat 1 1/2 tablespoon of oil. When Oil is hot add mustard seeds. When it start to pops up add urad dhal, bengal gram dhal and curry leaves and fry till it is brown in color.
Add onion and fry till it is translucent ( I forgot so I fried separately and added to the water)
Add tamarind juice and 2 cup water (You need about 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 cup of water and tamarind juice together). Add salt. Let it boil
When it is boiling add ragi flour. Switch it off flame. And mix the flour well. And when it is bit cool down use your hand and make to it to smooth dough. If water not enough heat the hot water to add. Apply another tablespoon of oil around the dough and keep it aside for 10 - 15 mins

Make equal size balls (each ball up to small lemon size). Take the plastic cover apply oil on the top of the cover and use the hand to spread the dough into flat round shape. Put the hole in the middle.

Heat the oil in the kada (enough to deep fry) Fry the vada till the "shhhh"sound goes off.
This can be eaten alone or with coconut chutney. This can last for 2-3 days

Strawberry Vanilla Chocolate Chip Muffin

Kids were having long weekend. Given a chance they don't eat bread and  traditional Indian tiffin like idli, dosa etc.. for the breakfast.. It has been a while since I did muffin. I was craving for Strawberry flavour  and my kids wanted to have Chocolate chips .. so I did both together. One thing I like about baking  muffins on my own is that we can control the sugar level ourselves.

Curd Vermicelli / Semiya

I had cooked vermicelli in place of rice when I visited one of my cousin. Of all I like Curd vermicelli. I wanted to try it for a while. However my kids are not warming up that idea. And I am so lazy to do just for me. Now since my in laws are in town I have more reason to try long awaited dishes as I have more people to give it a try and give feedback. MIL was surprised and told me she never tried before. In the end it turned out be good and everyone liking it. This is definitely lighter than the curd rice

Radish Chutney

Yet another vegetable chutney. One benefit for having vegetable chutney is it can be used to mix with rice and can be side dish for chapati (in addition to usual idli / dosa). I am a big fan of vegetable base chutney. When I first tried this chutney bit skeptical about it because of the strong strong flavour it has. So I wanted to  try it myself before I make as dish for everyone in the family. However I ran out of side dish so need to use this for everyone and guess what no can guess what is it and they liked it. Now this is one of regular dish at our house hold.

Bitter Gourd Pitlai

If one of the vegetable that my husband doesn't eat that is bitter gourd. However rest of our family likes it. However I wanted to try something with bitter gourd without jaggery or deep frying in the oil. Being sugar patient my mum does bitter gourd more often than me. So I have asked her for the recipe. She gave me this recipe. When I tried and had this for chapati after 2 days my husband couldn't even recognize this is bitter gourd and he liked it
