Spinach, Mushroom Lasagna


This is one of my mum favourite. I find it very cheesy. You bet, Kids love it. Whenever my mum is in town she will do this. When I asked my kids for the dinner they were suggesting Lasagna. When I checked the fridge I realized that I don't have  Broccoli  so I was checking with them whether we can do lasagna with spinach and mushroom. Kids agreed.

Cluster Beans (Kothavarangai) Usili Method 2

I love Usili, This method is easy to do and doesn't required steaming of Dhal paste. This is a high protein poriyal.

Pasta, Black Bean and Avocado(guacamole) Salad


I wanted to make salad for today dinner. I wanted to try out Pasta salad. It came out pretty good. This is quite filling and had balanced nutrition
Ingredients:


Cooked Black Beans - 1 Cup
Cooked Pasta - 1 Cup ( I have used spiral buckwheat pasta)
Avocado - 1 slice it
Carrot - 1/2 Cup Diced small pieces
Pepper - 4 teaspoon

Snake Gourd (Podalangai) Poriyal



I love snake gourd (podalangai) from my childhood. This is one vegetable I get it near my house (doesn't have to go to Little India). My 2nd son loves this also. This is very easy, Healthy and nutrious food. My mum used to use Moong dhal for this but sometime I use Channa dhal this gives different flavour to the poriyal.



Ingredients:
2 cups of snake gourd, peeled, cleaned and cut into small semi circle pices
1/2 cup of channa dal / kadala paruppu

Vanilla Milkshake



  • My kids were asking for the milkshake today. I had Vanilla ice cream in the fridge. It is easy to do and definitely goes well with kids. It is good summer treat for every one

Kondaikadalai (Channa, Chick peas) Rice - Chana rice - Chana Fried rice - Healthy one pot meal

I am stunned that I haven't done this rice in last 2 months. This is one of my specialty and kids love it. Base recipe for this is from Malika Badrinath. I have modified over the years to suite our taste and make it more healthy. It is really finger licking good and it is healthy also (rare right? )

Carrot Rice Roti - Akki roti recipe

Today kids will be home pretty late and they will have light snack outside so wanted to have something very simple and include some vegetable as part of daily serving. Rice roti is something easy and fast and good way of including vegetable as part of tiffin

Kovaikkai (tindora, kovakkai) chutney

Before I started this blog I used to do normal chutneys. After this I started trying out different things. One of the big area I started to experiment is to make chutney / Thuvaiyal using Vegetables. Kovaikkai is one of favourite vegetable for our family. We used to do Poriyal, rice, Sambar. Today I wanted to try Chutney out of it. It came out be very good. Try it out to believe it

Rice-coconut noodles (shevayi/idiyappam)

I am huge fan of this traditional version of idiyappam. My sisters love it too. My mum always take pain to do this one instead of instant rice flour one. When I first moved to Singapore i Didn't bring this special equipment with me. So it always in the list of when I go back to India I must eat list (That list never ends right).  I normally don't prefer coconut flavour but this one is an exception. I like this so much I have decided to get this special equipment. So had this for the past 8 years now. My kids love the process of making it. It is bit long process but it is all worth it.

Andhra Raw Banana (Valaikai, Aratikaya) Fry

My 2nd son loves Raw Banana Fry however my first one hates it.. So I need to find a day in which the lunch is only for 2nd son. This goes very well with any variety rice. Most of the time I used to do this with sambar powder however sometime ago I was having raw banana poriyal at one of the cousin function. Even though it looked the same but tasted different. But she cannot give me recipe as it was done by some one engaged for the function. I used my own guess and try it out.. It turned out to be pretty good.

Rawa (Rava) Vermicelli (Semiya) Khichadi

These days whenever I pack lunch for Office I take Uppuma or kichadi, It is easy to do in the morning and can carry. Also for reheating purpose these taste better. Also I read few articles about eating cold rice which is not good for the body. When I mix Rawa and Vermicelli to do kichadi my kids will make big fuss.. And complain it taste funny!. So Normally I do this when it is only for me (mostly for lunch pack)

Vazhai Thandu (valaithandu, Banana Stem) Poriyal

I like Vazhai Thandu. This I Get only if I go to little India. However for the past few trips I keep picking up Vazhai Poo (as it was fresh and in right size). Since both of these vegetables need to be made immediately (cannot keep for more than a day) I keep picking up Poo(flower) over stem. This time I was determined to pick up the Vazhai thandu as I started to crave for it. I manage to find this over the weekend and made poriyal out of it. It is so delicious and satisfying:-)

Eggless Pound Cake

When I searched in the internet for substitute for Egg in the cake there is lot of option available (Tofu, Yogurt, Condensed Milk etc..). Making Basic sponge cake is simple yet interesting for beginners like me. Since My son is allergic to Egg and I am vegetarian given that we are doing at home I have decided to try eggless version. I had all the ingredients at home so decided to give it a try.

Mullu Murukku

My Son was asking for snack for quite sometime.. They need something crunchy with rice (even with many vegetables). Last year with few visitors and our few visit to India we have been getting snacks from my mum and was there at home continuously so I have decided to give it a break. It has been 7 weeks in a row without snacks.. I decide to reward them. So today I did murukku. I always have murukku mavvu in the fridge. So it si easy to do.

Tropical Quinoa Salad

It so hot these days. Wanted to do something which will be refreshing for the hot day. I love all tropical fruits so decided to try with favourite Quinoa and make main meal out of it. It turn out to be very refreshing, tangy and perfect for a hot summer day. It is so easy to do and very healthy. And easy to include fruit serving as part of your daily meal.

Poori (Wheat, Godumai Puri)

Whenever we do Poori we do it out Maida most of the time.. It has been long time since I did by using wheat flour. Since I already had a maida for the week I have decided to do with Wheat.

Potato Masala (for Dosai and Poori)

I rarely do this masala at home as it is not famous with neither with my husband nor with my kids. Most of the time we have this when we are visiting back home. Today I thought of doing dosa but for got ferment the dosa batter. So quick way find alternative is poori masala. I bought Aachi Turmeric powder for the first time.. It is so yellow :-)

Pasta, Mixed Nuts Curry Salad


I wanted to do Pasta salad and was thinking about options. Whenever I go to Sizzler salad bar, I like Pasta Apricot and walnut salad. Inspired by that I wanted to try Mixed nuts and with bit of curry powder.It kind  of gives balanced diet. I had Buckwheat spiral pasta so I have used that. You an use any type of pasta or macaroni

Kuda Milagai Kootu (Capsicum Kootu)

I love this Kootu, I learned this from my mum. We love tomato kootu (except my 2nd son). This kootu has strong taste of tomato. The combination of tomato and capsicum is really amazing. Even one 2nd son who is not a big fan of tomato loves this. If you are bit lazy you can do this for lunch and reminder can be carried over for dinner with simple chapatti or upuma. It goes well with any upuma.

Senai kizhangu (Yam) Roast

This is my son favourite vegetable. This I will get it only when I go to little India But we get it all year around. So whenever I go to little India I buy this. This goes well with any rice. I can eat just this alone.Whenever I buy this vegetable, I do this Poriyal. It is simple to do but it does take bit of cooking time as it need to be roasted well.

Yellow Water Melon Juice

After coming to Singapore I am exposed to this nice fruit. My son likes Yellow water melon (may due to it's color his favourite color is Yellow) I find it both are same not much of different. What a treat to hot day!

Carrot, Celery and Ginger Juice

This is one of my regular juice in the past (noteI didn't say favourite). I do it because it is good for health and cholesterol and weight loss. Couple of week one of my colleague brought sandwich which had celery. It was pretty good. So thought of giving it a try again. This time I felt it is not a bad choice. Well kids didn't like it.

Beetroot Vadai

I got this recipe from my friend in Facebook Sarala. Thanks. First time did baking of the vadai. My son was doubtful about the taste and the crispyness of it. It came out to be pretty good. Thanks my friend!

Cabbage Soya chunks curry

Before I found this recipe most of the time when I buy soya chunk I couldn't finish before the expiry. Same goes for Cabbage. Kids not found of Cabbage as vegetable. They have started having Cabbage after this Curry. Now any form of Cabbage also ok with them. This curry also good because it is very high in Protein
Ingredients:
250 gms cabbage (finely chopped)
1 cup soya chunks
1 tea spoon Chilli powder
1 tea spoon dhaniya powder

Puli Aval (Poha in Tamarind)

Normally Aval is something I do it during Weekend breakfast. But these days if I have protein rich vegetables I do it for weekday lunch also. It is fast and easy to do. It is good for the lunch box. I love anything with tamarind Aval is light food. before marriage my mum used to do it as snack between meals.. Now days this has become as meal! You can really make it as wholesome meal with proper side dish which is high protein.

Tomato Rice

This is my husband favourite variety rice. Recently We are using brown rice instead of white rice. According to us (everyone in the family) it enhances the taste of it. This is one dish where healthy option also tasty option! When you have time you can do Tomato Thokku and keep it in fridge when u need it take it and heat it up. Thokku can last for couple of months (of course with proper refrigeration)

snake gourd (podalangai) kootu


I like snake gourd from young. But I was not found of kootu till my marriage.  After marriage (moving to Singapore) I become more health conscious. Kootu become naturally good choice. Kootu is low in oil and high in protein. Snake gourd is rich in fibre and helps prevent constipation.

Sabudana Khichdi (Javarsi Sago Upuma)

sabudana khichdi is very popular dish in maharashtra. this dish preferably having in fast. This dish is very tasty. My office Colleague used to bring whenever he is fasting.  He is from Maharashtrian. I like Sago dish.. I did this sometime ago it was total disastrous because I was soaking in the water overnight.. Today I tried again by just washing the Sabudana well and leave it for 4 hours (sprinkle water in between when it become dry) . It came out pretty well

Parotta

This is not a health food for 2 things used in the recipe,  Oil used in this recipe and Maida flour (because it is processed flour) so you should be having this once in a while..My kids love it but they also understand the nutrition facts of it. I still use Maida base dish but max to 1 dish a week. In Singapore Parotta is national food. You get different form, variety (from paper, tissue parotta to normal one with chocolate, jam, garlic, onion, cheese u name anything you will get it). It is a very long process also. So I seldom do this may that's why my kids will look fwd to it from the time I tell them the menu :-)

Tomato Quinoa


By now you might have noticed I am crazy about Quinoa. This yet another one similar to Tomato rice but substitute rice with Quinoa

Kadalai Curry ( Black Channa Curry)



I like this curry. I don't find any different when I substitute Coconut milk with Soya milk. However my kids prefer coconut milk instead of soya milk. In this recipe I have used Coconut milk if you are health conscious go with soya milk (With Soya Milk adjust the spice). This goes well with Appam .

Brown Channa - 1 Cup
Small Onion - 12 chopped finely

Idiyappam Flour


Ingredients:


Raw rice - 2 KG

Method
1. Wash, soak and dry the rice and powder it in a machine and shift it

Appam is always interesting dish due the shape of it. My son loves the way it is made. For him it is fun and he insist on helping. Cooked rice makes the difference in the softness

Rawa Roti


Yesterday when we plan for the meals I have decided to do Rava Roti. This is first time I have tried. It really tasted good. You should eat it hot. One it is cool it is bit harder

Ingredients:
Rava -  1 cup
Grated carrot - 1/2 cup
Grated Cucumber-  1/2 Cup
Chopped coriander leaves - 1 tablespoon

Snow Peas Sprout Chapatti

Once This used to be weekly once dish. But lately not sure why I was not doing it that often. This is season for it. I saw this nice sprout in the market this weekend. So decided to buy and do the chapatti. It is simple way to include protein in your diet.

Tamarind Quinoa

I like Quinoa. I have replaced rice with quinoa in most of the recipe. Last year when I was in US my sister was singing praise of it. When I first tasted it plain I felt it is little bitter. But now pretty addicted to it. Almost all rice base recipe can be done with Quinoa.

Brinjal (Eggplant) Curry

I seldom do Brinjal curry as rest of the family not found of it. I do rice or gravy for chapatti which all of us like. Today being long day in school kids normally have lunch at school and the lunch is just for me. So decided to do the brinjal curry. It is simple and easy recipe. If you use fresh brinjal it is tasty also

Brinjal (Eggplant) – 5 to 6 Nos (small size)

Bisibele Bath

I am big fan of hot bisibele bath. Bisibela is a famous dish in Karnataka. My mum used to do it well and one of her favourite too. I used to do it from scratch.  However once I was in India and brought Udupi Ruchi powder. And they prefer bisibele bath made from this masala. Kids and my husband gave me double thumbs up for this. so from there I am doing with this masala powder only (It saves time and work for me too)

Potato Fry


I heard usually kids love Potato. My kids are opposite to that.. They not even found of french fries. So we seldom use Potato (except aloo paratha). Mysore Pak


Mysore Pak is a popular South Indian sweet dish. This is the only Indian sweet that my first son like it. Infact the sweet that whole family like it with the exception of me. Peanut Chocolate muffin

I am not very found of Muffin. Kids love it. Most of the time we buy from outside. From the time I started this blog my son insisting I should make some.. My 2nd son is allergic to egg pure Egg. But he was ok with cake, muffin etc.. Cream Cheese, Cucumber Bagel Sandwich

Bagel is one of our favourite breakfast item for the weekend. I try to stay away from normal bread toast over the weekend as rest of the week kids mostly has that for breakfast. Bagel and cream cheese both are kids favourite.. So combination makes it best option for them!

Instant Mango Pickle


This is common dish during mango season at my mother in law house. They have Mango tree at their back yard very nice for this kind of pickle or sambar. Now writing about it made me craving for it. For the past 4 years somehow I am getting it during season.. Not sure this year whether we will get it... It is called maanga oorgai in tamil. It takes hardly ten minutes to prepare this pickle. In Singapore we get mango every time. It is no close to my MIL house Mango but something is better than nothing..This Mango is not bad

Hot Chocolate

I love hot chocolate. Today when I got up from the afternoon nap (yeah we have afternoon naps in weekend to catch up lost sleep over the weekdays) it was drizzling. What a weather to have hot chocolate and have your favourite book on the hand. I asked my kids whether they mind having hot chocolate instead of milo they gladly agreed

Oats Idli

 I used to do the Oats idli by normal way of grinding idli (3 cups of rice, 2 cups of rolled oats and 1 cup of urad dhal). But it is not a famous dish at home. So Stopped doing Oats idli for a while. Other day when I was talking to my sister she was saying my cousin does it well. So I called my cousin to get recipe. After couple of failed attempt (sticky once, doesn't get cooked even after 30 mins of steaming) today it came out pretty good. I have used creamy and smooth version of Oats. Today I used quick cooking oats. Good news is kids love it (my husband is not so excited about it :-))

Soya Avocado(guacamole) Milk

This is one of my favourite Saturday morning breakfast drink as I can buy fresh Soya milk when I do my Weekly vegetable shopping. Rest of my family is not fancy this.

Elephant Yam (karunai kilangu) poriyal

From young I love the Karunai kilangu. There is 2 different types of Karunai Kilangu. The bigger one has better taste. But in Singapore I get only the 2nd type. 
 


When we talk my sister used to say at least u  getting that in US nothing is available so be happy about it :-). Sometime this will cause itchiness in the tongue if the Yam is fresh. So keep the Yam for few days before you do. Normally I add tamarind paste just in case. Rest of my family is not so found of this so I seldom do it. But whenever I am in India my mum does this without fail

Ponnanganni Keerai Kootu

From young I am addicted to green leafy vegetable. Moving into Singapore after marriage exposed me to lot more green vegetable (still learning new names). In Singapore you get different variety of Keerai and from many parts of South east asia. Even though I miss lot of traditional keerai from backyard of my house back in India we are lucky enough to get some of Indian leafy vegetable in Singapore. And yeah no season to it.. you get most of it every day all day around the year. Ponnanganni is good for health and simple way to include in our diet is thro' Kootu or Poriyal
